"Be Thankful for What You Got"
'Tis the season for gratitude, and here at the end of a difficult, unpredictable year it feels especially important. Look no further than William DeVaughn's 1974 classic "Be Thankful for What You Got" for a message of continued resonance in 2020.
"Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac/ Gangsta whitewalls, TV antennas in the back/ You may not drive a car at all/ But remember, brothers and sisters, you can still stand tall/ Just be thankful for what you got."
It's been covered a few times over the years, introduced to new listeners by Massive Attack on their 1991 debut Blue Lines, and – my favorite version – Yo La Tengo on their 1997 all-timer I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. I'm thankful it exists!
I'm also thankful for trees, the music of John Coltrane, and that life is but a dream. Happy Thanksgiving.

Guess I've been a little distracted this month (something something election something), but here's a catch up on the last two weeks of covers. I'd promise to do a better job with content here, but wouldn't you rather be surprised than disappointed?
