Stone Canyon fire: Evacuations expanded as wildfire spreads near Lyons

Authorities have ordered residents near Stone Canyon to evacuate due to a wildfire that’s burning and spreading near Lyons, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said, and areas of Highway 36 North of Lyons to Apple Valley Rd.

The Boulder's Office of Emergency Management says is currently covering an estimated more than 400 acres. Crews are fighting the fire with ground crews and are using aircraft to drop retardant on the blaze. More teams have been called to help extinguish the fire.

Fire crews have responded and are going door-to-door to evacuate some residents. Residents in a region north of the town from Ute Highway and Nelson Drive north to Elk Ridge and Blue Mountain have been ordered to evacuate. Firefighting aircraft have also been dispatched to help extinguish the fire.

Many roads in the area have also been closed. The Boulder County Fairgrounds,  9595 Nelson Road in Longmont, has been designated an evacuation point. Residents who need to evacuate animals of any size can also bring them to the fairgrounds.
