Creede Repertory Theatre
The Creede Opera House was built to show movies to miners. But by the mid-'60s, as both mining and the town seemed tapped out, the opera house was boarded up. Enter locals, with an idea —to mine for tourists with summer melodramas in the old opera house. Enter next, undergrads from Kansas with a bigger vision — why not professional repertory theatre. Over ten frantic days in June 1966, a small troupe transformed the dusty hall and rehearsed their first show.
Paint was still wet on opening night of "Mister Roberts," but seats were packed, and the house rang with applause, even with chaotic scene-changes and wrong-speed overtures. Today the Creede Repertory Theatre is a rarified experience, with hundreds of shows since that first one, and one of few “great places to see the lights way off Broadway.”
