School buildings are closing. What should we do with them?

Listen Now

Low enrollment is motivating school districts across Colorado to close some buildings. But communities are finding new uses for these once-vibrant spaces. From mental health hubs to housing developments, organizations are stepping in to repurpose shuttered schools, bringing fresh life to empty classrooms and hallways while addressing critical local needs.

This week’s guests include Daniel Sampson of Driven By Our Ambitions, Dr. Janiece Mackey of Young Aspiring Americans for Social and Political Activism, and Andre Carbonell of Apprentice of Peace Youth Organization, who share insights on how their collective efforts are breathing new life into these spaces. Additionally, Joel Newton from Edgewater Collective discusses plans to convert a former school into a resource center for the Latino community, and you’ll hear about housing on the site of a former college in Denver.

RealTalk is hosted by Colorado Public Radio’s Nathan Heffel and Denver7’s Micah Smith.
