Young people who have a mentor are more likely to succeed academically, build strong social networks, and develop a sense of purpose. Mentoring has long been a critical factor in shaping the lives of youth, particularly in underserved communities.
This week on RealTalk with Denver7 and CPR News, hear four community leaders who have benefitted from mentorship and are recruiting adults to serve. It can be especially hard to find men to participate. For example, a commonly cited statistic is that Black men make up just 2 percent of formal mentoring programs.
This week’s guests include Javon Carter, an enrollment specialist at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado; the organization’s CEO Elycia Cook; Pos Ryant, the executive director and co-founder of The Apprentice of Peace Youth Organization; and Joelle Martinez, President & CEO of the Latino Leadership Institute.
Real Talk airs on CPR News and KRCC on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. and Mondays at 6:30 p.m.
The TV show airs on Denver7 on Saturdays at 5:30 a.m. and Sundays at 5:30 p.m. It also airs on Local3 on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m.
