Corporation for Public Broadcasting Awards Grant to Launch the Colorado Capitol News Alliance

Oct. 10, 2024 - The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced it has awarded a grant to Northern Colorado public radio station KUNC to lead the newly developed Colorado Capitol News Alliance, consisting of a coalition of public and nonprofit newsrooms including Colorado Public Radio.

The partner organizations of the Colorado Capitol News Alliance are KUNC, Colorado Public Radio, Rocky Mountain PBS and The Colorado Sun.

“CPR is thrilled to be part of the Colorado Capitol News Alliance led by KUNC,” said Stewart Vanderwilt, president and CEO of Colorado Public Radio. “We are looking forward to what we will be able to achieve with such a dynamic group of nonprofit and public media organizations working together to cover the state Capitol for all Coloradans.”

Beyond producing stories from the state Capitol for the partner stations, members of the alliance will also provide state Capitol reporting to Rocky Mountain Community Radio stations without a fee to member stations.

This grant will support the hiring of additional resources to cover the Colorado state Capitol and state government entities, with partners collaborating on news reporting, editorial planning and digital distribution. It will also allow CPR to make its long-running politics podcast, Purplish, an ongoing production, with additional voices and reporting from all the partners included in it.

This is one of seven CPB grants announced that will support hiring reporters and increasing the editorial capacity at stations around the country as well as extending the focus from legislative sessions that occur over a few months to year-round coverage that examines policies and their impact on citizens.
