An heiress and diplomat’s wife, Mildred Genevieve Montague Kimball regularly rubbed shoulders with heads of state and royalty. Better known as Tweet Kimball, she switched from ball gowns to jeans and boots with ease, to pursue an interest in livestock. She lived both lifestyles in Sedalia in the 50s.

First she set up home in a Scottish-style castle, then bought adjoining properties to form the sprawl she named Cherokee Ranch. Tweet happily got her hands in the muck and raised Santa Gertrudis beef cattle. Most ranchers said Colorado winters would kill them. But her animals won one blue ribbon after another.

She became the first woman to serve on the National Western Stock Show’s board and she gathered one of the most eclectic art and book collections in the country. Tweet Kimball’s land is now protected as a wildlife sanctuary.
